August 17, 2018/Weekly Column

Picnics, Parades and More – 08/17/2018

Greetings from Kate and Matt

Dear Democrats,

Of the many alarming aspects of our current administration is the attacks on our free press. From the Globe this week:

“The liberty of the press is essential to the security of freedom,” wrote John Adams. For more than two centuries, this foundational American principle has protected journalists at home and served as a model for free nations abroad. Today it is under serious threat. And it sends an alarming signal to despots, from Ankara to Moscow, Beijing to Baghdad, that journalists can be treated as a domestic enemy.

The Globe reached out to editorial boards across the country to address the issue that President Trump sees journalists as “The enemy of the people.” It is important that people pay attention to the role of the free press. I don’t think the Dispatch was exactly the kind of publication the Globe was seeking to share the message, but we wanted to emphasize that undermining the free press is undermining Democracy. My message is simple. Support the free press. Pay for good journalism. That is an important piece of what we as activists need to be doing.

I’ll close with something more fun!

March with Elizabeth Warren in the 2018 Caribbean Carnival Parade! Join Elizabeth and her 2018 campaign team as we celebrate the 45th Annual Boston Caribbean Carnival! RSVP to march with us in this year’s Carnival and celebrate the vibrancy of Caribbean culture. This year’s parade is on Saturday, August 25th from 12:00pm – 2:00pm, beginning at Roxbury YMCA and ending in Franklin Park.
