March is Here – New Events and More

Greetings from Kate and Matt
Dear Democrats,

It’s March. Here in Massachusetts it’s a time for town elections, town meetings and St. Patrick’s day events! It begins to feel like the worst of winter is over and the days are getting longer. It’s easier to get people to events.

And this year it means the Democratic Campaign Institute and then in April the China Pearl dinner. We are at the very beginning of caucus season!

Here’s a link to the MassDems website convention information:
https://massdems.org/2019-convention-caucus-information/
You’ll find the Preliminary Call to Convention and the delegate allocations here.

Democratically yours,

Kate Donaghue

Ideas for Committees – Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) Talks
Voter Choice Massachusetts is organizing the statewide movement to upgrade our voting system to Ranked Choice Voting (RCV) for state, federal and local elections and they would be happy to give a one hour (or shorter) RCV Talk to your DTC/DCC. Ranked choice voting allows you to rank the candidates on the ballot in the order you prefer them, instead of choosing just one. If your committee is not already in touch with the nonprofit advocating for RCV, connect with Voter Choice Massachusetts now (https://www.voterchoicema.org) by emailing scheduling@voterchoicema.org or calling 617-906-8166.

Sad News
MESSAGE ABOUT THE PASSING OF BETSY DUNN FROM ALICE WOLF:
It is with deep sadness that I inform you that Betsy Dunn passed away on Sunday, February 24th. The MassDems sent out a statement from our friend Alice Wolf:
“Betsy Dunn was an indefatigable champion of all women and of women Democrats. In the 1970s, she fought for the Equal Rights Amendment, traveling outside Massachusetts to get states to ratify the ERA. In Florida, she vigorously fought Phyllis Shlafly, a stubborn, well-funded ERA opponent.”

Free Six Week Training Webinar for Activists
The Association of State Democratic Committees, in conjunction with the new Best Practices Institute (BPI), is excited to launch our 2019 Train the Trainer (T3) Webinar program. T3 is a free six-week, twelve-part course, covering all aspects of grassroots campaigning. This program seeks to expand the skills of progressive activists and volunteers, by ensuring that comprehensive training is free and accessible for Democrats all over the country. Register for T3 today, and help us take our country back in 2020!

We’ll keep you posted throughout the next year and a half, but for now, we have a simple request. 90% of politics is just showing up. An email matters. A phone call matters more. Ideas for Committees – Scheduling your Caucus
As an experienced chair I have run a number of caucuses. Choosing the date and the venue is the first step. The venue must be ADA compliant. When picking the date in a nominating year, I work hard to pick a date that is available to as many people as possible, since typically people have to be present to run. In an issues year, with certain restrictions, usually you can run even if you are not present. When there is a month long caucus window, committees that meet monthly would likely have a meeting date within the window. Many committees find it helpful to do the caucus in conjunction with their regular meeting. Depending on the size of your delegation and how competitive it is, this is usually doable. When scheduling a caucus in conjunction with your meeting, the caucus must be at a time certain. You can schedule your meeting “immediately following adjournment of caucus” but not the reverse. If you prefer to have your meeting first, that’s fine, but the caucus mu! st be at a time certain. The time submitted to the MassDems must be the time of your caucus. Doors must open at least a half hour in advance, but that is not the time you should use in the MDP listing. Local publicity should be clear; if you list the doors open time then also list the caucus start time.
CONVENTION AND CAUCUS TIMELINE
April 19th: Deadline for submitting caucus date and location to Mass Dems.
May 11th to June 16th: Caucus window.
September 14th: State Convention, MassMutual Center, Springfield
OTHER CHANGES: This is the third year in which pre-registered Democrats can take part in our caucuses and run for delegate. Under state law citizens who are 16 and 17 can pre-register to vote. This year, as long as a person is 16 years of age or older on May 11th, and is a registered or pre-registered Democrat as of the day of the caucus the person can participate in a local caucus.

Submitting Events
Please send us your Democratic events. We want to publicize what you are doing. We usually go to press on Friday PM, so make sure you send your info no later than Thursday evening to get into that week’s issue.
1) Use subject line “For the Dispatch”
2) Put your event information in text format in the body of the email. Please include start time, end time (if any), location (with street address for GPS), event description (it’s good to mention food/drink/donations/RSVP), and a link to more info.
3) Send to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com

Note that unlike some other Yahoo groups, replies and other comments sent to us at ddemdispatch-owner@yahoogroups.comcome only to us and are not published.

The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular “Greetings from Kate” or “Greetings from Matt” reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.

Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)
