September 28, 2019/Weekly Column

Happy Fall! Upcoming Elections & More.

Greetings from Patrick (& Kate)

Dear Democrats,

As we begin the fall season, it’s time for Town & Ward committees to begin their reorganization for 2020! Nomination papers for positions on a Democratic Town or Ward Committee are now available, and should be submitted to City and Town Clerks by Friday, October 25th at 5:00 pm (The official due date is November 8th at 5:00 pm, but a week buffer will make sure your signatures/ papers are all in order!). The Secretary of State requires 5 signatures from registered Democrats within the same town or ward in order for a Democratic candidate or Democratic slate to appear on the March 3, 2020 presidential primary ballot. We recommend that Democratic candidates acquire more than 5 signatures to plan for any rejected signatures.

For more information about the nomination process, the Massachusetts Secretary of State’s website has a 2020 elections brochure (http://bit.ly/2naxe54) and nomination paper check-list (http://bit.ly/2miIQms) that you can check out! Finally, if you do have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the MassDems Political Director, Nigel Simon at 617-939-0800 or nigel@massdems.org

Have a wonderful weekend!

Sincerely,

Patrick Coyne
Communications Manager, Massachusetts Democratic Party

P.S.
If you know of an event that’s not listed, reach out to us at events@massdems.org and we’ll include it in the next edition of the dispatch! If you have events that you would like to include in our weekly Dispatch, please email us at events@massdems.org by Thursday at 5:00 pm so we can include in our Friday email.

Ideas for Committees–Publicize your events in the Dispatch!
The Dispatch is a great place for town and ward committees to publicize their monthly meetings and events. That’s why one of our goals going forward is to be in touch with every town and ward committee across the state so they can take advantage of its reach. Over the next few weeks, we’ll be reaching out to committees and coordinating with them to make sure we don’t miss out on listing any of their events. If you’re a chair or member of a town or ward committee, reach out to us at events@massdems.org to jump start this process and please subscribe the events@massdems.org email account to your mailing lists!

OVERVIEW AND NOTES

Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.
