Statement of MDP Chairman Gus Bickford on National Emergency Vote
Below, please find a statement from Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman Gus Bickford in reaction to tonight’s vote in the U.S. House of Representatives to pass a resolution of disapproval of President Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration:
“Yesterday, nearly 60 former high ranking national security officials said of Donald Trump’s national emergency declaration, “we are aware of no emergency that remotely justifies such a step.” Today, the U.S. House of Representatives formally passed a ‘resolution of disapproval’ aimed at cancelling Trump’s ill-conceived and hate-fueled declaration. Yet Governor Charlie Baker still refuses to denounce the President’s actions – even given the chance while dining with both Trump and VP Mike Pence in Washington this week. Baker’s milquetoast assertions that the President and Congress should ‘work together’ mean nothing in the face of a President who willfully undermines our democracy. Governor Baker needs to grow a backbone and stand up for the people of Massachusetts.”
