Method For Electing A New Chair
July 26, 2013
On Wednesday July 24, the Executive Committee of the Massachusetts Democratic Party reviewed the work of an Ad Hoc Committee I appointed to articulate a process and timeline for electing a new Chair of the Massachusetts Democratic Party. I’d like to thank the members of that working group including James Roosevelt, the party’s legal counsel, MarDee Xifaras, Co-chair of our By-laws Committee, Gus Bickford, Chair of our Rules Committee and Eric Turner, the party’s Treasurer for their customary excellent and thorough work. Their report can be found below (or here).
At the Executive Committee meeting, our fabulous Treasurer, Eric Turner, who has served with me for almost my entire term, announced his intention to step down as well. You can expect specifics including an official notification on that in the coming days but I mention it now as it impacts our process and the Ad Hoc Committee also addressed the process for choosing a new Treasurer.
In fact, the process is very straight forward. We determined that there will be a special meeting of the Democratic State Committee on October 17, 2013 (details to follow) which is in addition to the meetings already scheduled for balance of 2013 on September 7th and November 14th. At the September meeting, I will officially submit my resignation effective when state committee members elect a new Chair at the October meeting. Also at the September meeting, state committee members will have an opportunity to choose a new Treasurer following official notification of the vacancy in the coming days. The Rules Committee will meet in August (details to follow) to propose specifics for the standing rules for these elections.
I will keep you all informed as this process is finalized. Please feel free to email me directly (jwalsh@massdems.org) with any questions.
Thanks,
John Walsh
Chair
