MassDems Statement on Special Elections

Following the results from today's special elections, Democratic Party Chair Tom McGee released the following statement:

"I want to congratulate and welcome new Democrats to the legislature, State Senator Joe Boncore and State Representative Dan Cahill. I've worked with Dan for many years during his time on the Lynn City Council. He's an extremely hard worker and I'm confident he's going to be a strong advocate for his district.

"I've come to know Joe over the past month since he became the Democratic nominee. As the Senator from neighboring district, I know we are going to partner on many projects important to working families.

"It's important to note that the Republicans couldn't even field an opponent for Dan or Joe.

"I also want to commend Joan Meschino for running a spirited campaign steeped in Democratic values. Her message of being an independent voice for the South Shore and her clear plans for job creation and taking on the opioid epidemic resonated with voters across the district. However, we were unable to overcome the outside spending from Gov. Baker's Republican machine and Super PACs.
As we suspected, Republicans were willing to spend whatever they thought necessary to hold onto a seat that they've had for over 20 years.

"But, I know Joan is going to be back in the fall and we look forward to working alongside her to take back another Republican seat."
