Massachusetts Senate Soundly Rejects CharlieCare

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Democratic Party today issued the following statement after the State Senate overwhelmingly votes to reject Governor Charlie Baker’s efforts to roll back the Affordable Care Act in Massachusetts:

“Democratic State Senators sent a clear message to Governor Baker today that Massachusetts will not stand for his bait and switch budget games that target the healthcare coverage of those most in need,” said Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair Gus Bickford. “CharlieCare, just like the bills being pushed by Republicans in Washington, is a cruel attempt to cut coverage for the working poor in the guise of reform.”

“The Governor should take the time to speak to some of the 100,000 working parents CharlieCare would kick off MassHealth for more expensive insurance with less coverage to see the people he’s targeting with his cruel cuts,” continued Bickford. “As Senate Republicans prepare to send private health insurance markets into a death spiral, we need to be protecting Medicaid coverage, not cutting it.”
