Massachusetts Democrats Celebrate Historic Election Night

Massachusetts Democrats celebrated a historic night on Tuesday, as voters in the Commonwealth came out in unprecedented numbers to support a strong, progressive vision for our state.

U.S. Senator Elizabeth Warren’s resounding reelection reflected voters’ desire for a Senator who stands WITH the working families of Massachusetts and stands UP to Donald Trump. Along with Senator Warren, the people of Massachusetts sent to Washington the boldest, most committed Congressional delegation in the country, including Congresswoman-elect Ayanna Pressley, the first woman of color to represent Massachusetts in Congress, and Congresswoman-elect Lori Trahan in the 3rd Congressional District.

At the state level, Attorney General Maura Healey, Treasurer Deb Goldberg, Auditor Suzanne Bump, and Secretary of State Bill Galvin were all re-elected by decisive margins. Despite facing nearly $16 million in outside, dark-money spending, Jay Gonzalez mounted a strong challenge to Republican Charlie Baker and connected with voters who believe we need bolder, more aspirational leadership in the Corner Office on Beacon Hill.

“Tonight, the Democratic Party in Massachusetts showcased its diversity and depth,” said Gus Bickford, Chairman of the Massachusetts Democratic Party. “We are immensely proud that the Democratic candidates elected up and down the ballot reflect the diversity of our Commonwealth, in terms of gender, race, and perspective. Voters made their choice clear – we need progressive leaders who are going to help move our state forward and stand up for the rights of women, minorities, the LGBTQ community, immigrants, and working families. We have a mandate to provide bold, aspirational leadership here in Massachusetts – to make the Commonwealth a national leader on issues like transportation, education, healthcare and the environment. We’re excited to get to work.”

Female candidates made a particularly powerful mark in last night’s election. In addition to Warren, Pressley, and Trahan, Congresswoman Katherine Clark was reelected to Congress with nearly 75 percent of the vote. At the state and local level, the people of Massachusetts will be represented by a strong group of female elected officials, including Healey, Goldberg, and Bump, along with dozens of women who were elected or reelected as State Representatives, State Senators, and District Attorneys, including Tram Nguyen, Becca Rausch, and Rachael Rollins.
