Massachusetts Democratic Party Stands with House Members Against CharlieCare

Condemns Republican Assault on Medicaid in Washington and in Massachusetts

BOSTON – The Massachusetts Democratic Party today issued the following statement regarding the House of Representatives vote against Governor Baker’s plan to roll back the Affordable Care Act in Massachusetts:

“We applaud the members of the Massachusetts House for rejecting Governor Baker’s plan to make Massachusetts the first state in the nation to roll back coverage through the Affordable Care Act for the working poor,” said Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair Gus Bickford. “While Washington Republicans don’t even know what version of their bill they’re trying to pass or the true damage it would cause, CharlieCare’s impact is clear—it would kick 100,000 working parents off of Medicaid and onto higher-cost insurance plans with less generous coverage.”

“Taking Medicaid away from working families won’t do anything to reduce the overall cost of health care; it’s just a budgeting maneuver that puts the costs on hard-working families who are already struggling to make ends meet,” continued Bickford. “Governor Baker and his fellow Republicans should end their attempt to take away Medicaid from working families, and work with Democrats on real bipartisan reforms that actually reduce the cost of health care, like cracking down on prescription drug pricing and investing in addiction prevention and recovery.”
