Become an Elector

What is an Elector?

When you head to the polls on November 3, 2020, and cast your vote for Joe Biden for President of the United States, you’ll actually vote to send a group of electors who’ll cast their votes after the popular vote is taken, as part of the Electoral College.

According to our Delegate Selection Plan, Massachusetts’ 11 electors will be elected by the Massachusetts Democratic State Committee at their August 8, 2020 meeting.

How do I become an Elector?

  • Candidates for Elector MUST notify the MassDems of their intent to run by 5pm on Wednesday, July 29, 2020 by submitting this pledge of support to delegate@massdems.org. You must be a registered Democrat to be elected a Democratic elector. Massachusetts elector candidates must pledge to vote for their party’s nominees. Candidates may also submit a one-page statement or biography prior to 5pm on July 29, 2020 to delegate@massdems.org that MassDems will share with the State Committee.
  • Each candidate will have the opportunity to deliver a one-minute speech during the August 8, 2020 Democratic State Committee meeting via Zoom. Prior to the meeting, candidates will be contacted with their estimated time for their speech and the link to join the call. Should the election be resolved by acclamation, no speeches will be required.

The election will be by plurality and the electors will be gender balanced (within one) with non-binary electors not counting towards either gender.

We’ll also elect two alternates of different genders. The election of alternate electors will take place following the election of electors and only candidates who have filed for elector and were not elected are eligible candidates. The alternate elector election results will determine their rank to replace a vacancy (if gender balance within one is not an issue) and if there is a tie, the rank of alternates will be determined by a flip of a coin.
