July 12, 2019/Dispatch

Today from the MassDems! Many New Events

Greetings from Patrick (& Kate)
Dear Democrats,

I am honored and thrilled to be collaborating with Kate on Donaghue’s Democratic Dispatch! This Dispatch was only made possible by the one and only Kate Donaghue, who has devoted 20 years to perfecting this remarkable organizing tool. We cannot thank her enough for her service to this Party, and for all of her guidance during this Dispatch’s new chapter—thank you, Kate!

Our goal is to continue this Democratic Dispatch at the same intensity and grit as Kate has done. We will continue to keep Massachusetts Democrats involved and engaged in the political events throughout the state. Our grassroots work today will prepare us for the elections in 2019, 2020 and beyond.

If you have events that you would like to include in our weekly Dispatch, please email us at events@massdems.org by Thursday at 5:00 pm so we can include it in our Friday email.

We look forward to working with all of you!

Sincerely,

Patrick Coyne
Communications Manager, Massachusetts Democratic Party

Ideas for Committees – Ward and Town Committee Deadline Approaching!
IMPORTANT INFORMATION THE ELECTIONS DIVISION:
The deadline to designate the number of ward and town committee members elected at the 2020 Presidential Primary is fast approaching. Unless your currently organized ward or town committee votes to change the number of members to be elected and notifies the Secretary of the Commonwealth by August 1, 2019, the committee will be allowed to elect the same number of members as it did at the 2016 Presidential Primaries. The maximum number of members that can be elected is 35 and the minimum is 3. If you are keeping the number of members to be elected the same, you do not need to take any further action.
On the Secretary of the Commonwealth’s website there is a brochure with additional information and a form that your committee may use to change the number to be elected on March 3, 2020.
Here’s the link: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/elewtc/wtcidx.htm
Any changes must be received by the Elections Division by 5:00 pm on August 1st

July 12 – Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Detention Camps TODAY! FRIDAY!
On July 12th, Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Detention Camps ( https://www.lightsforliberty.org ), will bring thousands of Americans to detention camps across the country, into the streets and into their own front yards, to protest the inhumane conditions faced by refugees. Communities through the Commonwealth have been signing on. Check for an event near you!

Update: Submitting Events to the Dispatch
The Massachusetts Democratic Party will be partnering with me on issuing the Democratic Dispatch. It is our hope that the first issue that is sent out by them will be the June 28th issue. Towards that end please keep the following in mind:
– Please send information to events@massdems.org. This is the best way to get your events listed.
– If you have a mailing list that you use for events, please include events@massdems.org on your mailing list. As time permit we will look for appropriate events to include.
– I will continue to look at my facebook invitations and my personal email for events to include, but I anticipate having less time to do this in the future.
– Please do not use Matt’s personal email address for events (shalias2@mac.com).
NOTE: If you want your event listed on the MassDems calendar as well, you pretty much need to include an end time for your event. IF you want an event in the Dispatch, but not the MassDems, please say so. Thanks for your patience with this transition.

OVERVIEW AND NOTES
Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.
