July 26, 2019/Dispatch

Today from the MassDems! Debate Watch Parties & More!

Greetings from Patrick (& Kate)
Dear Democrats,

The second round of presidential debates are next Tuesday and Wednesday! If you are interested in attending a watch party, please look through this dispatch, the Democrats webpage, and the young democrats’ page for parties throughout the Commonwealth. Some Presidential campaigns may also be hosting watch parties across the state. You can look for one near you by checking their websites.

If there isn’t a watch party being held in your area, consider hosting your own! They’re a great way to connect with other activists and for a town or ward committee to bring in new members.

Another way for committees to engage new members is to have events like your monthly meetings listed in the Dispatch! If you don’t see events for your local town or ward committee listed in the Dispatch, email us at events@massdems.org and we’ll add them to the dispatch. As we get closer to election season, now is a great time to focus on increasing membership and involving new people in your committees. We encourage you to take advantage of the Dispatch’s reach!

If you have any questions about town and ward committees, reach out to us at contact@massdems.org. Happy debate-watching!

Sincerely,

Patrick Coyne
Communications Manager, Massachusetts Democratic Party

P.S.

If you know of an event that’s not listed, reach out to us at events@massdems.org and we’ll include it in the next edition of the dispatch! If you have events that you would like to include in our weekly Dispatch, please email us at events@massdems.org by Thursday at 5:00 pm so we can include in our Friday email.

Ideas for Committees -Check the Box Weekend of Action August 3rd!
On the weekend of August 3rd, the Mass Dems will be hosting a Check the Box Voter Registration Weekend of Action across the state. Join the DTCs, youth groups, and other activists that have already signed up to organize door-to-door registration drives in their own communities.

Update: Submitting Events to the Dispatch
The Massachusetts Democratic Party will be partnering with me on issuing the Democratic Dispatch. It is our hope that the first issue that is sent out by them will be the June 28th issue. Towards that end please keep the following in mind:
– Please send information to events@massdems.org. This is the best way to get your events listed.
– If you have a mailing list that you use for events, please include events@massdems.org on your mailing list. As time permit we will look for appropriate events to include.
– I will continue to look at my facebook invitations and my personal email for events to include, but I anticipate having less time to do this in the future.
– Please do not use Matt’s personal email address for events (shalias2@mac.com).
NOTE: If you want your event listed on the MassDems calendar as well, you pretty much need to include an end time for your event. IF you want an event in the Dispatch, but not the MassDems, please say so. Thanks for your patience with this transition.

OVERVIEW AND NOTES
Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.
