Summer Musings, Events, Cookouts, Picnics and More, 06/16/2017
Greetings from Kate
Dear Democrats,
Summer! A time to relax with friends and enjoy yourself. A time to enjoy nature and be outside. A time to swim and enjoy our rivers, lakes and ocean beaches.
We can do everything I mentioned, knowing that our current President has put our country at risk. Rivers, lakes and oceans are endagered as our government seeks to dismantle the protections that have been put in place over the last thirty years.
Take some time to relax this summer, but we must continue to resist. There are rallies and other activities that are happening over the summer. Talking to friends and contacting legislators are all ongoing activities.
I’ll highlight one important activity today. There are some municipal elections that are divided starkly on Democrat versus Republican lines, with Republicans who strongly support President Trump and his values. I encourage Democrats to work to elect Democrats to municipal office for the following reasons:
– Good government: we want people who share our values.
– Campaign experience: both new and long time activists have the opportunity to learn and enhance campaign skills.
– Voter engagement: in this political climate we have the opportunity to engage people who might previously have only voted in presidential elections.
Savor the summer, while still planning time to volunteer.
I’ll take my editor’s prerogative and encourage people to attend the forum in Westborough on Tuesday on single payer health care. It’s jointly sponsored by the Westborough and Northborough Democratic Town Committees. Details are in the calendar section below.
REMINDER: To answer a survey about the convention: http://bit.ly/2rcw19B
Democratically yours,
Kate Donaghue
PS Events and schedules change rapidly. Matt and I work hard to get the most up to date information, but sometimes we don’t receive notices of changes. Weather can cause cancellations and postponements as well. If in doubt, check with the organizers.
Ideas for Committees: Resistance Summer
Resistance Summer is here. There are many people looking for a way to make a difference. Consider having a “Resistance Summer” event in your community. Activities that you might already be doing, whether it is a summer picnic, or an an event with a speaker, fit in the umbrella of Resistance Summer. Marketing with the Resistance Summer approach is a way to connect with other people who might not otherwise be aware of a Democratic Town Committee event.
MIDWEEK EVENTS: I’m organizing some Resistance Summer midweek events, typically some sort of outreach to voters or activists. If you are interested in taking part in events that will typically run from about 10:30 am to 3:00 pm occasionally during the week, e-mail me at KateDonaghue@aol.com .
SUMMER COOKOUT: Moveon has a program – have a cookout with a few friends. Connect with other like minded folks:

Submitting Events
Please send us your Democratic events. We want to publicize what you are doing. We usually go to press on Friday AM, so make sure you send your info no later than Thursday evening to get into that week’s issue.
1) Use subject line “For the Dispatch”
2) Put your event information in text format in the body of the email. Please include start time, end time (if any), location (with street address for GPS), event description (it’s good to mention food/drink/donations/RSVP), and a link to more info.
3) Send to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com
Note that unlike some other Yahoo groups, replies and other comments sent to us at ddemdispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com come only to us and are not published.
The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular “Greetings from Kate” or “Greetings from Matt” reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.
Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)

SENATOR ELIZABETH WARREN continued to fight for students against Education Secretary Betsy DeVos agenda to privatize education.
CONGRESSMAN MIKE CAPUANO continued his fight for internet privacy by making an impassioned speech on the House floor.

CONGRESSMAN BILL KEATING authored a piece for his Democratic colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee calling for a thorough investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
CONGRESSMAN JOE KENNEDY called out Trumpcare for what it is – “an act of malice” that would strip health insurance from 24 million Americans and get rid of addiction and mental health services many rely on.
CONGRESSMAN STEVE LYNCH spoke out against the federal hiring freeze and how it negatively impacted our nation’s veterans seeking to continue their dedicated public service to our country by entering the federal workforce.
CONGRESSMAN JIM McGOVERN continued to fight for those in need by being a strong advocate for food assistance programs and the 43 million Americans that depend on them.
CONGRESSMAN SETH MOULTON advocated for people getting more involved in the public debate surrounding the misinformation campaign of the Trump administration, encouraging voters to continue to protest and stand up for what they believe in.
CONGRESSMAN RICHARD NEAL introduced bipartisan legislation to strengthen the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit to help improve access to affordable housing for low-income individuals.
CONGRESSWOMAN NIKI TSONGAS stood up for science by introducing the Scientific Integrity Act, a bill that will help insulate government-directed scientific research from the influence of political pressure and special interests.
