Summer is Here! Picnics, Cookouts, Summer Socials

Greetings from Kate

Dear Democrats,

Almost twenty years! Thanks to all who have reached out to me since I announced my retirement from taking a lead role in the Dispatch. I’ll continue to be here, but in more of a support role. Many, many thanks to all who have read this correspondence over the years!

It has been a great experience to start with a handful of people on an email list and have it grow. I sometimes joke that I started the Dispatch for activists but have found that it is of great use to campaigns.

Back in 2002 when we lost the gubernatorial election, I said to myself, “What can I do? What can I personally do to make a difference?” And I said to myself, “Expand the Dispatch.”

I urge all of you to ask yourself the same question. What can you do, as an individual to move your causes forward?

Democratically yours,

Kate Donaghue

PS Please be sure that you use the events@massdems.org e-mail address when sending in events. My personal email address will be checked, but not as frequently as I previously did.

Ideas for Committees – Make your August Meeting a Membership Drive!
Do you have a meeting or social event scheduled for August? Trying to think of a speaker? Or maybe you skipped it because it is summer in an add numbered year? Since nomination papers for reorg are available on August 6, have a new member social. Maybe you can move your meeting to an ice cream parlor. Or go to a local pub. Or you can turn your regular meeting into a new member event. Ask people to bring someone who might be interested. Folks can talk about how they got connected to the Democratic Party infrastructure and what worked well and what could be changed. You can begin to get as many signatures as possible so that you are not rushing around at the last minute. Click here for details or scroll down.
REMINDERS:
The deadline for add-on applications is July 8, at 5 pm. If people came to your local caucus and expressed an interest in the add-on process, this is a good time to follow-up amd s[read the word to your committee members. Here’s a link:  http://bit.ly/2019AddonApplication

July 12 – Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Detention Camps MORE COMMUNITIES ADDED

There are events in Bedford, Beverly, Boston, Brewster, Cambridge, Dennis, Easton, Edgartown, Great Barringrton, Pittsfield, Falmouth, Framingham, Greenfield, Hyannis, Hudson, Lexington, Natick, New Bedford, Provincetown, Salem, South Deerfield, Wellfleet.

Update: Submitting Events to the Dispatch
The Massachusetts Democratic Party will be partnering with me on issuing the Democratic Dispatch. It is our hope that the first issue that is sent out by them will be the June 28th issue. Towards that end please keep the following in mind:
– Please send information to events@massdems.org. This is the best way to get your events listed.
– If you have a mailing list that you use for events, please include events@massdems.org on your mailing list. As time permit we will look for appropriate events to include.
– I will continue to look at my facebook invitations and my personal email for events to include, but I anticipate having less time to do this in the future.
– Please do not use Matt’s personal email address for events (shalias2@mac.com).
NOTE: If you want your event listed on the MassDems calendar as well, you pretty much need to include an end time for your event. IF you want an event in the Dispatch, but not the MassDems, please say so. Thanks for your patience with this transition.

OVERVIEW AND NOTES
Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.
