Roosevelt Dinner Announcement; Many New Events
Greetings from Kate and Matt
Dear Democrats,
On Wednesday morning, Richard Marcus, a good friend of mine and passionate Democrat passed away unexpectedly. For today’s column I am sharing the words of Caroline Bays who volunteered extensively with him:
Richard was so filled with passion, determination, and tireless persistence, that it seems to defy the laws of physics that so much energy could just disappear from this world so suddenly. It is a great loss to me personally, but also to our community. He always believed he could make this world a better place and he never stopped in his efforts to create a more just, more caring world. Our community will miss his transforming presence. It’s hard to believe Richard and I went to an Arlington presentation on their use of Restorative Justice, an alternative to incarceration, just six months ago. As a result of that evening, Richard became passionate about expanding the use of restorative justice throughout our community and the nation. In the subsequent months, like everything else he did, he advocated for restorative justice with relentless determination. So in Richard’s honor, I hope that you will consider making donations to Communities for Restorative Justice. I know many! of you will want to join us in honoring the memory of Richard who was such an incredibly powerful presence in all of our lives. His memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, May 4th at the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center, 47 Nichols Ave. in Watertown.

Information for Committees – NARAL Pro-Choice Speakers
Form NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts
In light of the federal attacks on reproductive rights, statewide coalition is in formation in support of the ROE Act (S.1209/H.3320), will help people access safe, legal abortion by removing unnecessary, burdensome provisions that delay and deny care. We have seen a resolution against the ROE Act introduced at at least one city council meeting, and expect other cities and towns across the state will propose similar resolutions. If your committee would like resources about the ROE Act or to have a representative from the coalition speak at one of your upcoming meetings, please reach out to Kate Froehlich at NARAL Pro-Choice Massachusetts, kate@prochoicemass.org or 617-556-8800×22.

Ideas for Committees – Preview of Reorganization Timeline – Advice
08/01/19 Last day for city and ward committees to notify the Secretary of Commonwealth of the number of members to be elected to each ward and town committee.
08/06/19 Nomination papers available at the Election Division in the Office of the Secretary of the Common wealth and some city and town clerks’ offices for ward, town and state committee.
11/08/19 Last day and hour (5PM) to submit ward, town or state committee nomination papers to Registars of Voters for certification of signatures.
11/15/19 Last day and hour (5PM) for Registrars of Voters to complete certification of signatures on nomination papers for ward, town and state committees.
11/19/19 Last day and hour (5PM) to file ward, town and state committee nomination papers with the Secretary of the Commonwealth.
OVERVIEW AND NOTES
Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.

The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular “Greetings from Kate” or “Greetings from Matt” reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.
Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)
