Resistance, Thoughts, Events, Opportunities and More, 06/23/2017
Greetings from Kate
Dear Democrats,
We live in discouraging times. It’s easy to feel powerless.
Next week I have the privilege of serving as a mentor to the High School Democrats of America Summit, their annual gathering of young people who are looking to be leaders in organizing High School Democrats. As my young friends and fellow mentors prepare for Summit, controversy arose over a summer reading list for high school students. Students in an AP class were assigned to choose from a list of books, mostly by highly conservative folks like Glenn Beck and Anne Coulter: http://bit.ly/2rXmLM0 . One of the High School Dems was enrolled in the class and helped bring media attention to the issue, resulting in the retraction of the assignment. I was shocked to read the young woman’s subsequent post about what it is like to be a progressive Democrat in a deeply conservative area of the country.
Yet her voice made a difference.
A few hours ago, I was at a Democratic event and a man approached me. He said to me, “I am here tonight because of you.” He reminded me that we had met on election day in Londonderry, NH and that he had told me he wanted to get active and I had directed him to his DTC. He had been helping out ever since. He had connected to NH, through my DSC friend and colleague, Martina Jackson.
Our voices made a difference.
As I write this I am once again simultaneously discouraged and energized. I needed some words of inspiration for myself and I thought of President Obama’s story and words.
“One voice can change a room, and if one voice can change a room, then it can change a city, and if it can change a city, it can change a state, and if it change a state, it can change a nation, and if it can change a nation, it can change the world. Your voice can change the world.”
While it’s insanely disheartening to see his work being undone, he did change the nation and the world.
I watched this video: http://bit.ly/1jAxuBw
And now I am fired up and ready to go! Onward to Resistance Summer.
Democratically yours,
Kate Donaghue

NOTE: We are hearing that people are having trouble sending events to the DDemdDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com address. Please continue to use that address, but please cc me at KateDonaghue@aol.com

Submitting Events
Please send us your Democratic events. We want to publicize what you are doing. We usually go to press on Friday AM, so make sure you send your info no later than Thursday evening to get into that week’s issue.
1) Use subject line “For the Dispatch”
2) Put your event information in text format in the body of the email. Please include start time, end time (if any), location (with street address for GPS), event description (it’s good to mention food/drink/donations/RSVP), and a link to more info.
3) Send to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com
Note that unlike some other Yahoo groups, replies and other comments sent to us at ddemdispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com come only to us and are not published.
The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular “Greetings from Kate” or “Greetings from Matt” reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.
Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)

SENATOR ELIZABETH WARREN continued to fight for students against Education Secretary Betsy DeVos agenda to privatize education.
CONGRESSMAN MIKE CAPUANO continued his fight for internet privacy by making an impassioned speech on the House floor.

CONGRESSMAN BILL KEATING authored a piece for his Democratic colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee calling for a thorough investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.

CONGRESSMAN STEVE LYNCH spoke out against the federal hiring freeze and how it negatively impacted our nation’s veterans seeking to continue their dedicated public service to our country by entering the federal workforce.
CONGRESSMAN JIM McGOVERN continued to fight for those in need by being a strong advocate for food assistance programs and the 43 million Americans that depend on them.
CONGRESSMAN SETH MOULTON advocated for people getting more involved in the public debate surrounding the misinformation campaign of the Trump administration, encouraging voters to continue to protest and stand up for what they believe in.
CONGRESSMAN RICHARD NEAL introduced bipartisan legislation to strengthen the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit to help improve access to affordable housing for low-income individuals.
CONGRESSWOMAN NIKI TSONGAS stood up for science by introducing the Scientific Integrity Act, a bill that will help insulate government-directed scientific research from the influence of political pressure and special interests.
