August 3, 2018/Dispatch
Registration Information – 08/03/2018
Greetings from Kate and Matt
Dear Democrats,
New! Elizabeth Warren Town Hall Meeting in Fitchburg.
Conlon Fine Arts Building, Fitchburg State University 367 North Street, Fitchburg, August 9 – Doors open: 6:00pm; Event start time: 6:30pm https://my.elizabethwarren.com/page/event/detail/townhall/jwt
I’m going to use my soapbox today to talk about voting and absentee voting. Here is a link to the Elections Division site: http://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/eleidx.htm
The details:
Deadline for voter registration:
August 15 for the September 4 primary.
October 17 for the November 6 election.
Or at your local town clerk or elections division.
At this link a person can register or pre-register to vote, update your address, party or name, check your registration information.
Absentee ballot applications are in at Town Halls and City Halls across the Commonwealth. And there are new easier to use forms. People eligible to vote absentee can either request a form or vote in person at city or town hall during regular business hours between now and 5:00 pm on August 31.
Short form:
https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/elepdf/2018-Short-Form-Absentee-Ballot-Application.pdf
New regular form: Cam be used for FAMILY application:
https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ele/elepdf/absentee/English-Absentee-Ballot-Application.pdf
So right now a young person who has not yet registered to vote, but will be age 18 on or before September 4, can go to the town clerk/elections division and in one short visit:
– Vote absentee in the primary.
– Request an absentee ballot for the general election.
If you have a young person in your family or circle of friends who is going away to college, but visiting home here in Massachusetts on a regular basis, think about what works best for an absentee ballot address. If the request is that the absentee ballot goes to the college dorm or mail drop there are many failure points:
– The ballot may or may not get to the right mailbox.
– The student may or may not check for “snail mail.”
– The student may or may not remember to fill out the ballot.
– The student may or may not have postage stamps or easy access to stamps.
If the absentee ballot application is sent to the family home, it is often easier for the parent to drop the completed ballot off at town/city hall or drop it in the mail. While there are many students who make voting a priority, just like in the rest of the population, there are some who don’t. If you are reading this e-mail you are likely a motivated voter. Please try to reach out to someone who may not be as motivated to vote!
Democratically yours,
Kate Donaghue
PS Please be sure that you use the DDemDispatch-owner e-mail address when sending in events. And please keep in mind that Matt and I work hard to try to get the most up to date information, but sometimes things change or there is a miscommunication. Check with the organizer or the webiste if you see something that looks wrong.

Ideas for Committees – Election Planning Meeting
As we get closer to the general election, now is a good time to start planning Democratic activities to gear up for the general election. Having a meeting and publicizing that it is happening is a good way to identify area people who might not be interested in engaging in routine Democratic Committee meetings but who would be ready to engage in campaigns. I repeat the advice I have shared in the past, “Do something and tell people about it.” H/T John Walsh.

You Have to Laugh Occasionally – Edited by Matt Shear
Tea Pain – Trump’s legal team is split over a Mueller interview. One half is afraid Trump will lie and the other half is afraid he’ll tell the truth.
Fake Barack Obama – What type of ID do we need to buy groceries? I’m at the store and all I have on me is my birth certificate.
Last weekend’s messages and highlights from our fearless Democratic leaders:
Senator Elizabeth Warren’s video about how important it is to challenge Trump’s border policies: “…we will not permit America to break up families. And that’s how I see this. Donald Trump is not King. The power is with the people.”
Video of Senator Markey’s remarks at Saturday’s march in Boston: “Donald Trump wants to make America hate again and we are standing up and saying that he will not take our country.
Coverage of Congressman Joe Kennedy’s remarks on Saturday: “We stand up and we say, not on our watch. Not while we have something to say about it…they will stand up and fight for our humanity and the humanity of our neighborhood.”
Congresswoman Katherine Clark’s posts and photos from the Framingham rally: @From MA5 to our nation’s capital and across the country, Americans are taking to the streets to stand in solidarity with immigrant families until they are reunited.”
Congressman Jim McGovern’s video from the Worcester march: “This is about tearing up families and that goes against our values. That betrays who we are and we need to stand up to that.”
Attorney General Healey’s video with Alyssa Milano on why she’s suing to stop family separation: “President Trump’s family separation policy isn’t just illegal – it’s immoral. Families remain apart. We can’t turn our back on them.”
Coverage of Senators Warren and Markey calling on the Trump administration to release the full list of separated families to ensure we are taking steps to reunite all families.
