Pre-Fourth of July Week Edition – Many New Events
Greetings from Kate
Dear Democrats,
I was privileged to spend last week in DC with almost 100 young people from the High School Democrats of America. It was a great week with speakers, legislators, skill building, as well as sightseeing and having fun. I encourage campaigns to involve high school students and other young people in meaningful roles. If they show interest and are willing to take responsibility, look to them to take on meaningful roles. Give them opportunities to learn and grow. It’s actually good advice for all volunteers.
Following up on that topic, Democrats as young as 16 can apply to be add-on delegates to the state convention. Minorities, people with disabilities and members of the LGBT community are also eligible to apply. APPLICATION DEADLINE: July 8 at 5:00 pm. Apply here:
http://bit.ly/2019AddonApplication
Democratically yours,
Kate Donaghue
PS Please be sure that you use the events@massdems.org e-mail address when sending in events. And please keep in mind that we work hard to try to get the most up to date information, but sometimes things change or there is a miscommunication. Check with the organizer or the website if you see something that looks wrong.
Thank You Matt Shear
Matt has been working with me on the Dispatch since 2008. One night, leading up to the election, as I was falling asleep at the keyboard I sent out a plea for help. Several people responded and we worked as a multi-person team for a while. For almost eleven years, Matt has been working side by side with me as the Dispatch has gone out every week. In addition to working on adding events to the calendar, he became the editor of the “You have to laugh” section. As the Dispatch transitions to be done in collaboration with the Mass Dems, Matt will be taking a break from the Dispatch. I am eternally grateful for his help!
Ideas for Committees – Send Us YOUR Idea, Add-on applications.
Is there something that your local Democratic Committee does that you think would be helpful to other committees? Do you have a “best practice” to share that you think would be helpful? Let us know!!
As we continue the transition of the Dispatch to a collaborative effort with the Democratic Party, we are looking for your ideas. Send them to events@massdems.org with the subject line, “Ideas for Committees.”
REMINDERS:
The deadline for add-on applications is July 8, at 5 pm. If people came to your local caucus and expressed an interest in the add-on process, this is a good time to follow-up amd s[read the word to your committee members. Here’s a link: http://bit.ly/2019AddonApplication
Reorg is coming soon. Click here for details or scroll down.
July 12 – Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Detention Camps*
On July 12th, Lights for Liberty: A Vigil to End Human Detention Camps ( https://www.lightsforliberty.org ), will bring thousands of Americans to detention camps across the country, into the streets and into their own front yards, to protest the inhumane conditions faced by refugees. There are events in Boston, Cambridge, Martha’s Vineyard, Pittsfield, Framingham, Hyannis, Provincetown and Salem.
Update: Submitting Events to the Dispatch
The Massachusetts Democratic Party will be partnering with me on issuing the Democratic Dispatch. It is our hope that the first issue that is sent out by them will be the June 28th issue. Towards that end please keep the following in mind:
– Please send information to events@massdems.org. This is the best way to get your events listed.
– If you have a mailing list that you use for events, please include events@massdems.org on your mailing list. As time permit we will look for appropriate events to include.
– I will continue to look at my facebook invitations and my personal email for events to include, but I anticipate having less time to do this in the future.
– Please do not use Matt’s personal email address for events (shalias2@mac.com).
NOTE: If you want your event listed on the MassDems calendar as well, you pretty much need to include an end time for your event. IF you want an event in the Dispatch, but not the MassDems, please say so. Thanks for your patience with this transition.

11/19/19 Last day and hour (5PM) to file ward, town and state committee nomination papers with the Secretary of the Commonwealth.
OVERVIEW AND NOTES
Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.
