Memorial Day Weekend Edition

Greetings from Kate and Matt
Dear Democrats,

I’m a big supporter of Election Day Registration. I spent some time researching this issue a few years ago and it was clear that this is huge for increasing participation.

My DSC colleague, Cheryl Clyburn Crawford, talks about this:
“Election Day Registration (EDR) has been passed in 20 states and has been in place since 1973 when Maine and Minnesota first passed it! By allowing people to register or update their information on Election Day, millions of voters nationwide have been able to cast a ballot on Election Day. Massachusetts should be next! It is estimated that over 100,000+ eligible voters in Massachusetts would benefit from being able to register or update their registration on Election Day. 2/3 of voters around the country that utilized EDR are already registered voters who need to update their existing registration information. This policy aims to not only register new voters but also ensure that already registered voters are not turned away by bureaucratic errors such as fixing an incorrect middle initial, an apartment number or any other inaccuracy. EDR allows for these simple and common mistakes to be corrected at the polls.”

If this interests you check out the June 5th Lobby Day. Details below.

Democratically yours,

Kate Donaghue

PS Please be sure that you use the DDemDispatch-owner e-mail address when sending in events. And please keep in mind that Matt and I work hard to try to get the most up to date information, but sometimes things change or there is a miscommunication. Check with the organizer or the website if you see something that looks wrong.

Ideas for Committees – Fill Every Seat
From DSC Member Arthur Powell
FILL EVERY SEAT
August 1, 2019 is the last day for city and ward committees to notify the Secretary of Commonwealth of the number of members to be elected to each ward and town committee. Each town and each ward can elect up to 35 Democrats when candidates appear on the March 3, 2020 Presidential Primary Ballot. This link will show you how many Democrats could have been elected in 2016 in your town or ward. Let’s have 35 seats available in each town and ward this year.
https://bit.ly/2X4hJbP
USE THIS FORM ONLY TO CHANGE EXISTING NUMBER OF MEMBERS TO BE ELECTED
If your town/ward already elects 35 members, you don’t need to do anything. If your town/ward allows for less than 35 members, encourage your chair to complete this form and allow the full number of seats. Lets work together to fill every seat.

OVERVIEW AND NOTES
Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.

E-Mail Lists/Campaign Contacts
SEND ME INFORMATION ON YOUR LIST If your list is not listed here, or the information that I have needs to be changed, just send an e-mail to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com

Please sign up for the lists that suit your needs. If it turns out a list doesn’t suit you, just opt out. In some, but not all of these groups, it helps to write a note as to why you want to join. Just as an FYI, in some groups, the groups is configured so a message is not seen. So let the owner know who you are.

Submitting Events
Please send us your Democratic events. We want to publicize what you are doing. We usually go to press on Friday PM, so make sure you send your info no later than Thursday evening to get into that week’s issue.
1) Use subject line “For the Dispatch”
2) Put your event information in text format in the body of the email. Please include start time, end time (if any), location (with street address for GPS), event description (it’s good to mention food/drink/donations/RSVP), and a link to more info.
3) Send to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com

Note that unlike some other Yahoo groups, replies and other comments sent to us at ddemdispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com come only to us and are not published.

The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular “Greetings from Kate” or “Greetings from Matt” reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.

Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)
