June 17, 2019/Dispatch
Many Summer Events
Greetings from Kate and Matt
Dear Democrats,
As some of you know I retired from my “day” job last month. In order to free myself more for travel, helping on campaigns and other retirement activities, the Democratic Dispatch will become a collaborative effort. The Massachusetts Democratic Party will be working with me on this venture. We have begun transition planning. I am excited for this new phase for the Dispatch and for my life.
The Dispatch is in its 20th year! It seems a good time to shift to more of a support role. Matt plans to retire completely from the Dispatch. Matt has been partnering with me since 2008! I could not have lasted this long without him! I am very grateful for his assistance for such a long period of time
It’s been an interesting almost twenty years! Matt and I have put a lot of time into this and appreciate it when we can connect someone looking to get involved with opportunities to meet candidates and connect with other activists. I’ll continue to be part of the Dispatch team, but at a less time consuming level!
Please see below for information on how to submit events under our new joint system.
Democratically yours,
Kate Donaghue
PS Please be sure that you use the events@massdems.org e-mail address when sending in events. And please keep in mind that we work hard to try to get the most up to date information, but sometimes things change or there is a miscommunication. Check with the organizer or the website if you see something that looks wrong.
Ideas for Committees – Debate Watch Party
Have some fun together by hosting a debate watch party. Your Democratic Committee can have a debate watch party on either of the two evenings 6/26 and 6/28. Or you can do both. A debate watch party is easy to host. You can do a private home or a restaurant that lets you use the television.
Ideas for Committees – Kate’s Kanvass Hints
Want to have a meeting and train people on canvassing?
My document is a comprehensive guide to canvassing.
You can use it as the curriculum for a meeting or workshop!
As my schedule permits I will come to your local DTC/DWC meeting and present on best practices.

Update: Submitting Events to Dispatch
The Massachusetts Democratic Party will be partnering with me on issuing the Democratic Dispatch. It is our hope that the first issue that is sent out by them will be the June 28th issue. Towards that end please keep the following in mind:
– Please send information to events@massdems.org. This is the best way to get your events listed.
– If you have a mailing list that you use for events, please include events@massdems.org on your mailing list. As time permit we will look for appropriate events to include.
– I will continue to look at my facebook invitations and my personal email for events to include, but I anticipate having less time to do this in the future.
– Please do not use Matt’s personal email address for events (shalias2@mac.com).
NOTE: If you want your event listed on the MassDems calendar as well, you pretty much need to include an end time for your event. IF you want an event in the Dispatch, but not the MassDems, please say so. Thanks for your patience with this transition.

Ideas for Committees – Preview of Reorganization Timeline – Advice
08/01/19 Last day for city and ward committees to notify the Secretary of Commonwealth of the number of members to be elected to each ward and town committee.
08/06/19 Nomination papers available at the Election Division in the Office of the Secretary of the Common wealth and some city and town clerks’ offices for ward, town and state committee.
11/08/19 Last day and hour (5PM) to submit ward, town or state committee nomination papers to Registars of Voters for certification of signatures.
11/15/19 Last day and hour (5PM) for Registrars of Voters to complete certification of signatures on nomination papers for ward, town and state committees.
11/19/19 Last day and hour (5PM) to file ward, town and state committee nomination papers with the Secretary of the Commonwealth.
OVERVIEW AND NOTES
Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.
Submitting Events
Please send us your Democratic events. We want to publicize what you are doing. We usually go to press on Friday PM, so make sure you send your info no later than Thursday evening to get into that week’s issue.
1) Use subject line “For the Dispatch”
2) Put your event information in text format in the body of the email. Please include start time, end time (if any), location (with street address for GPS), event description (it’s good to mention food/drink/donations/RSVP), and a link to more info.
3) Send to events@massdems.org
Note that unlike some other Yahoo groups, replies and other comments sent to us at ddemdispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com come only to us and are not published.
The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular “Greetings from Kate” or “Greetings from Matt” reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.
Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)
