Fall is Right Around the Corner! Elections Season & More

Greetings from Patrick (& Kate)

Dear Democrats,

It was great to see so many of you in Springfield this past Saturday for our 2019 Convention! Attendees heard inspiring speeches, took part in important discussions in breakout sessions, and strengthened Democratic connections across the Commonwealth!

Now that the convention is over, we’re excited to shift towards election season. If your city/town hasn’t had their preliminary elections yet, make sure that you know when and where to vote. And don’t forget to encourage your friends and family to go to the polls too! Help them make a plan to vote and post voter information on your social media!

Help your friends and family get registered for the November election. The deadline to vote in the November election is October 20th. Get your friends and family registered here: (https://www.sec.state.ma.us/ovr/) and let’s keep this blue wave going into 2019, 2020 and beyond!

Sincerely,

Patrick Coyne
Communications Manager, Massachusetts Democratic Party

P.S.
If you know of an event that’s not listed, reach out to us at events@massdems.org and we’ll include it in the next edition of the dispatch! If you have events that you would like to include in our weekly Dispatch, please email us at events@massdems.org by Thursday at 5:00 pm so we can include in our Friday email.

Ideas for Committees–National Voter Registration Day!
Next Tuesday is National Voter Registration Day! To celebrate, consider hosting a Check the Box voter registration drive, on the 24th or any other day! I have attached the MassDems “Our Values” one-pager as well as our Check the Box one-pager.
(Our Values One-Pager: http://bit.ly/2lXUFhx & Check the Box: http://bit.ly/2XY1Rr9)
Beyond increasing democratic participation, voter registration drives are also a great way to connect with the community and increase your DTC’s visibility! If you want to host a registration drive, sign up here (http://bit.ly/2ms75yk) or email the MassDems Political Director, Nigel Simon, at nigel@massdems.org and we’ll help you organize one!

Ideas for Committees – Preview of Reorganization Timeline – Advice
08/01/19 Last day for city and ward committees to notify the Secretary of Commonwealth of the number of members to be elected to each ward and town committee.
08/06/19 Nomination papers available at the Election Division in the Office of the Secretary of the Common wealth and some city and town clerks’ offices for ward, town and state committee.
11/08/19 Last day and hour (5PM) to submit ward, town or state committee nomination papers to Registars of Voters for certification of signatures.
11/15/19 Last day and hour (5PM) for Registrars of Voters to complete certification of signatures on nomination papers for ward, town and state committees.
11/19/19 Last day and hour (5PM) to file ward, town and state committee nomination papers with the Secretary of the Commonwealth.

OVERVIEW AND NOTES
Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.
