Events, Fundraisers. Cookouts and More, 06/09/17
Greetings from Kate
Dear Democrats,
The Convention was a lot of fun and really like a family reunion. I met readers from across the state and had a great time.
Over the weekend, Democrats in all 50 states kicked off Resistance Summer with more than 100 events, including town halls, rallies, canvass launches, phone banks, and other organizing efforts to strengthen our state parties and help candidates up and down the ballot.
So now we continue with the important work of electing Democrats. Whether you are phone banking Georgia or hitting the pavement for local Democrats, we move forward with our efforts.
I’ll close by sharing a message from Gus about our convention:
After a robust debate and the adoption of various amendments, delegates voted to approve the 2017 Massachusetts Democratic Party Platform, our Party’s most progressive Platform to date. This Platform serves as a statement of our values and principles as Massachusetts Democrats and will help us shape the vision we have for the Commonwealth.
To view the platform: https://massdems.org/platform/2017-platform

Everyone loves a parade! Enjoy Pride!
Democratically yours,
Kate Donaghue
PS Events and schedules change rapidly. Matt and I work hard to get the most up to date information, but sometimes we don’t receive notices of changes. Weather can cause cancellations and postponements as well. If in doubt, check with the organizers.
Ideas for Committees: Convention Follow-up Activities
Convention often brings out people who have not engaged previously with the local Democratic Party. New delegates, add-ons, volunteers have all expressed interest in connecting with the MDP. Within the senate district there is the chance to get to know people from neighboring communities. Following Convention stay connected. Add people to your e-mail list. Have a post convention gathering of delegates, possibly as part of your Democratic Town or Ward Committee meeting. Get feedback, but mostly get people connected.
Then do something! Canvass your neighborhood:
– encourage non-voters to register
– persuade voters to become Democrats
– invite Democrats to engage with your Committee.

Submitting Events
Please send us your Democratic events. We want to publicize what you are doing. We usually go to press on Friday AM, so make sure you send your info no later than Thursday evening to get into that week’s issue.
1) Use subject line “For the Dispatch”
2) Put your event information in text format in the body of the email. Please include start time, end time (if any), location (with street address for GPS), event description (it’s good to mention food/drink/donations/RSVP), and a link to more info.
3) Send to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com
Note that unlike some other Yahoo groups, replies and other comments sent to us at ddemdispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com come only to us and are not published.
The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular “Greetings from Kate” or “Greetings from Matt” reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.
Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)
Mass Delegation Working for Us
Recent highlights from the Massachusetts Congressional Delegation speaking up for residents and against the Trump Administration:
SENATOR ED MARKEY, a champion for those struggling with addiction, filed legislation to prevent fentanyl and other deadly opioids from being imported into the United States.
SENATOR ELIZABETH WARREN continued to fight for students against Education Secretary Betsy DeVos agenda to privatize education.
CONGRESSMAN MIKE CAPUANO continued his fight for internet privacy by making an impassioned speech on the House floor.
CONGRESSWOMAN KATHERINE CLARK continued her leadership in making quality, affordable child care accessible for all families.
CONGRESSMAN BILL KEATING authored a piece for his Democratic colleagues on the House Foreign Affairs Committee calling for a thorough investigation into Russian interference in the 2016 election.
CONGRESSMAN JOE KENNEDY called out Trumpcare for what it is – “an act of malice” that would strip health insurance from 24 million Americans and get rid of addiction and mental health services many rely on.
CONGRESSMAN STEVE LYNCH spoke out against the federal hiring freeze and how it negatively impacted our nation’s veterans seeking to continue their dedicated public service to our country by entering the federal workforce.
CONGRESSMAN JIM McGOVERN continued to fight for those in need by being a strong advocate for food assistance programs and the 43 million Americans that depend on them.
CONGRESSMAN SETH MOULTON advocated for people getting more involved in the public debate surrounding the misinformation campaign of the Trump administration, encouraging voters to continue to protest and stand up for what they believe in.
CONGRESSMAN RICHARD NEAL introduced bipartisan legislation to strengthen the Low-Income Housing Tax Credit to help improve access to affordable housing for low-income individuals.
CONGRESSWOMAN NIKI TSONGAS stood up for science by introducing the Scientific Integrity Act, a bill that will help insulate government-directed scientific research from the influence of political pressure and special interests.
