DDemDispatch Tax Day Rallies, Platform, Fun Events and More

Dear Democrats,

Saturday people are rallying across the country to demonstrate that we want to see Donald Trump’s tax returns. Americans want transparency. Americans want to know that everyone is helping to pay for services like roads and more. People are willing to pay their fair share of taxes, the key word being fair. There are rallies here in Massachusetts in Cambridge and Pittsfield (details below). Use social media as well to express your desire to have him disclose his tax returns.

I have attended three Mass Dems Platform hearings/meetings in the past week. I have been impressed by the number of people who have testified and the thoughtfulness of their testimony. The Massachusetts Democratic Party platform is a statement of party values and reflects the current policy positions of the party. Details on the remaining Platform Hearings and Meetings are listed at http://massdems.org/platform – see below for an overview of the platform process.

FLIP THE HOUSE: Jon Ossoff, Democratic candidate for Congress in Georgia, is a strong contender in Tuesday’s special election. See below for how to get involved. Like a number of you I made calls for the special election in Kansas. We saw the impact of the calls in the high turnout in early voting. In a district that Donald Trump won by 27 points, Democratic candidate Jim Thompson had a strong showing.

CONVENTION GUEST PASSES: People have been asking me about how to purchase guest passes to the Convention in Worcester. The fee for guests is $50.00. Guests can register here: http://bit.ly/2017guestpass .

Democratically yours,

Kate Donaghue

PS Events and schedules change rapidly. Matt and I work hard to get the most up to date information, but sometimes we don’t receive notices of changes. Weather can cause cancellations and postponements as well. If in doubt, watch MassDems calendar and check with the organizers.

Resistance School
Resistance School is a free four-week practical training program — live in Cambridge or online — that will sharpen the tools we need to fight back at the federal, state, and local levels. Our goal is to keep the embers of resistance alive through concrete learning, community engagement, and forward-looking action. We believe that both long-time activists and new additions to the movement need to forge effective offensive strategies to secure progressive victories. Throughout April, we invite you to join with neighbors, friends, or classmates to participate in livestreamed interactive workshops with renowned political campaigners, communicators, and organizers. Each of the skills they’ll showcase is critical to amplifying our collective impact. Together we’ll learn how to:
Session 1: Communicate our values in political advocacy, featuring Tim McCarthy, VIEW ONLINE
Session 2: Mobilize and organize our communities, featuring Sara El-Amine, Wednesday VIEW ONLINE
Session 3: Structure and build capacity for action, featuring Marshall Ganz, Thursday, April 20, 7:00-8:30pm ET

Caucus and Convention Information
The method of selecting delegates was approved on November 14 by the DSC.
Please refer to this document (once is is posted) for information on the process. Some of the key dates are listed here:
Deadline for notifying MDP of caucus date: January 27, 2017
Caucus window: February 4 to April 2, 2017
Convention date: June 3, 2017 in Lowell
NOTE: The DSC voted to allow sixteen and seventeen year old pre-registered Democrats to take part in the State Convention and vote on the party platform at the 2017 Democratic State Convention, if they become delegates. Preregistered Democrats who will be age 18 by the anticipated date of the 2018 primary will be able to participate in caucuses and run for delegate or to apply to become youth add-on delegates.
PLATFORM: Since it is a platform convention, caucuses usually go fairly quickly. This makes it easier to have a committee meeting in conjunction with your local caucus. A specific time for a caucus is required. For example it it is not allowed to have the caucus follow the adjournment of a committee meeting. But a committee meeting can immediately following the adjournment of a caucus. With the very long window it is easy to schedule a caucus on the same day as a regular meeting. With the provision to have candidates who are absent be able to run under specified conditions, many committees find this to be a practical way to proceed.

Submitting Events
Please send us your Democratic events. We want to publicize what you are doing. We usually go to press on Friday AM, so make sure you send your info no later than Thursday evening to get into that week’s issue.
1) Use subject line “For the Dispatch”
2) Put your event information in text format in the body of the email. Please include start time, end time (if any), location (with street address for GPS), event description (it’s good to mention food/drink/donations/RSVP), and a link to more info.
3) Send to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com

Note that unlike some other Yahoo groups, replies and other comments sent to us at ddemdispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com come only to us and are not published.

The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular “Greetings from Kate” or “Greetings from Matt” reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.

Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)

ANYTOWN DEMOCRATS ELECT DELEGATES TO STATE CONVENTION

Registered Democrats in Anytown recently held a caucus to elect delegates to the 2017 Massachusetts Democratic Convention.

Elected as delegates were Anthony Adams, Betty Bailey, Chris Christopher, Debra Davids and Edward Edwards. Mary Smith, Chair of the Anytown Democrats, will serve as an ex officio delegate. Also serving as ex officio delegates are: Rep. Sidney Samuels, D-Anytown and Mike Martin, Democratic State Committee Man.

The Convention will be held on Saturday, June 3rd at the DCU Center in Worcester. Democrats from across the state will gather to vote on the Party Platform and hear from elected officials.

“The caucus was very well attended,” commented Ms. Smith. “There has been a heightened interest in political activism over the last few months,” she added.

“It was exciting to see so many people take part,” said Joe Jones, the Outreach Officer for the Democratic Committee. “We are always looking for people who want to get involved,” he mentioned.

The committee normally meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the Anytown Community Building. For more information on the Democratic Party or any of their meetings, please contact Ms. Smith at MarySmith@xyz.com or check out their website at www.anytowndems.org. For general information on the Convention, please contact the Democratic State Committee at 617-939-0800

SEND ME INFORMATION ON YOUR LIST If your list is not listed here, or the information that I have needs to be changed, just send an e-mail to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com.

Please sign up for the lists that suit your needs. If it turns out a list doesn’t suit you, just opt out. In some, but not all of these groups, it helps to write a note as to why you want to join. Just as an FYI, in some groups, the groups is configured so a message is not seen. So let the owner know who you are.
