DDemDispatch: Science March, Fundraisers, Speakers and Fun Events

Dear Democrats,

The calendar continues to be full of interesting events across the state. We have the science rally and other earth day events on Saturday. Platform Hearings and local Platform Meetings continue across the state. A number of new events have been added to the list. The Emerge organization is holding a fundraiser a week from today, hosted by my good friend Senator Karen Spilka. Emerge is dedicated to educating Democratic women about running for office. Details on all of the above are in the calendar section below or the special platform section.

As I was putting together the Dispatch I looked at the platform schedule. There are 41 hearings and meetings that have been held or are going to happen. In addition to testimony, these events are great opportunities to have informal discussions with others who have similar interests and concerns. Many people attend even if they do not have formal testimony or even speak. Delegates and alternates are especially encouraged to attend.

The Democratic State Committee is meeting on April 29. All DSC meetings are open to the public and a number of non-members attend. We are meeting in Bourne. People are welcome to attend. Details are in the calendar section below.

FLIP THE HOUSE: The CNN headline said, “Georgia special election goes to runoff as GOP gets wakeup call.” Jon Ossoff, Democratic candidate for Congress in Georgia, had a strong showing with support from people here in Mass who made phone calls and raised money. See below for details on how to help in this and other Congressional races.

Democratically yours,
Kate Donaghue

PS Events and schedules change rapidly. Matt and I work hard to get the most up to date information, but sometimes we don’t receive notices of changes. Weather can cause cancellations and postponements as well. If in doubt, watch MassDems calendar and check with the organizers.

Ideas for Committees – DSC Members
With the DSC meeting coming up on April 29, it seems a good time to mention local committees and the DSC. Members are elected by Senate District. There are add-on, ex officio and twenty year members as well. Consider the following:
1) Add DSC members to your e-mail list.
2) If you don’t know all of them, introduce yourself to them, especially the district elected members.
3) Invite them to speak at a meeting. In addition to adding them to your e-mail list, consider inviting them to present at a meeting. Maybe you have a specific topic you want covered. Or ask what the person would like to discuss.
4) At any local meeting, if a DSC member is present and time permits, invite the person to make announcements or say a few words.

Resistance School
Resistance School is a free four-week practical training program — live in Cambridge or online — that will sharpen the tools we need to fight back at the federal, state, and local levels. Our goal is to keep the embers of resistance alive through concrete learning, community engagement, and forward-looking action. We believe that both long-time activists and new additions to the movement need to forge effective offensive strategies to secure progressive victories. Throughout April, we invite you to join with neighbors, friends, or classmates to participate in livestreamed interactive workshops with renowned political campaigners, communicators, and organizers. Each of the skills they’ll showcase is critical to amplifying our collective impact. Together we’ll learn how to:
Session 1: Communicate our values in political advocacy, featuring Tim McCarthy, VIEW ONLINE
Session 2: Mobilize and organize our communities, featuring Sara El-Amine, Wednesday VIEW ONLINE
Session 3: Structure and build capacity for action, featuring Marshall Ganz, Thursday VIEW ONLINE
Session 4: Sustain the resistance long-term, featuring Michael Blake, Thursday April 27, 7:00-8:30pm ET

*04/22/2017 Democracy Through the Looking Glass*
Saturday, April 22, 7 PM
Firehouse Center for the Arts, Market Square, Newburyport
A Documentary Film. A journey down the rabbit hole of our broken political information system. Where shiny objects hypnotize the media, truthiness empowers and paranoia runs rampant.
Panel discussion immediately following the screening with:
Kevin Bowe, Film Maker
Joel Brown, (Moderator) Journalist
John Giordano, RISE Greater Newburyport
Eileen Whyte Springer, Policy Analyst
A citizen embeds himself with the media covering the 2016 Presidential election. So begins the journey down the rabbit hole of our broken political information system. Where shiny objects hypnotize, truthiness empowers and paranoia runs rampant. This 40,000 foot story is told from the trenches of press conferences, voter experiences and the campaign trail, with insights from veteran CBS journalist Bob Schieffer, Boston Globe Editor Brian McGrory, Harvard University’s Nicco Mele and others. Ultimately, this is a story about the immense challenges our Democracy faces in the digital age and the role “we the people” must play in renewing long-held values in turbulent times.

Submitting Events
Please send us your Democratic events. We want to publicize what you are doing. We usually go to press on Friday AM, so make sure you send your info no later than Thursday evening to get into that week’s issue.
1) Use subject line “For the Dispatch”
2) Put your event information in text format in the body of the email. Please include start time, end time (if any), location (with street address for GPS), event description (it’s good to mention food/drink/donations/RSVP), and a link to more info.
3) Send to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com

Note that unlike some other Yahoo groups, replies and other comments sent to us at ddemdispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com come only to us and are not published.

The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular “Greetings from Kate” or “Greetings from Matt” reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.

Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)

ANYTOWN DEMOCRATS ELECT DELEGATES TO STATE CONVENTION

Registered Democrats in Anytown recently held a caucus to elect delegates to the 2017 Massachusetts Democratic Convention.

Elected as delegates were Anthony Adams, Betty Bailey, Chris Christopher, Debra Davids and Edward Edwards. Mary Smith, Chair of the Anytown Democrats, will serve as an ex officio delegate. Also serving as ex officio delegates are: Rep. Sidney Samuels, D-Anytown and Mike Martin, Democratic State Committee Man.

The Convention will be held on Saturday, June 3rd at the DCU Center in Worcester. Democrats from across the state will gather to vote on the Party Platform and hear from elected officials.

“The caucus was very well attended,” commented Ms. Smith. “There has been a heightened interest in political activism over the last few months,” she added.

“It was exciting to see so many people take part,” said Joe Jones, the Outreach Officer for the Democratic Committee. “We are always looking for people who want to get involved,” he mentioned.

The committee normally meets on the third Tuesday of the month at the Anytown Community Building. For more information on the Democratic Party or any of their meetings, please contact Ms. Smith at MarySmith@xyz.com or check out their website at www.anytowndems.org. For general information on the Convention, please contact the Democratic State Committee at 617-939-0800

Please sign up for the lists that suit your needs. If it turns out a list doesn’t suit you, just opt out. In some, but not all of these groups, it helps to write a note as to why you want to join. Just as an FYI, in some groups, the groups is configured so a message is not seen. So let the owner know who you are.
