Cookouts, Campaigns and More – 07/13/2018
Greetings from Kate and Matt
Dear Democrats,
Elections have consequences. I know that you have heard it before and I will say it again. Elections have consequences. We are seeing it with the nominee to the Supreme Court.
Campaigns have consequences. It might sound obvious, but a good campaign can change the course of history. There are many ways that people can make a difference, both locally and nationally. There are opportunities to support Massachusetts candidates, as well as people in other states.
Donating money, both here and across the country is important. But many people want to do more.
I am often asked where people can make a difference in other states. If you are looking to be “boots on the ground” I generally suggest NH01, ME02 and NY19. New Hampshire 1 is an open seat that has recently gone back and forth between D and R. It is very close geographically, but still a contested primary. Maine 2 is the only congressional seat in New England currently held by a Republican. There is now a nominee and people can meet him in Newton on Tuesday. And there is New York 19. This is currently a Republican seat that is very winnable by a Democrat. And there are groups that are working to ensure that the Democratic nominee is victorious.
Find something that suits your time and interest and do something. Check out the list of events below. Do something. The worst thing you can do is nothing.
Democratically yours,
Kate Donaghue

Ideas for Committees – Invite a Democratic Legislator to Speak
Inviting your Democratic State Rep or your Democratic State Senator to a DTC meeting has many benefits. If your legislator has a Republican opponent please try to arrange an opportunity for him or her to speak. Some think that you are preaching to the choir, but as the say, that’s how you get them to sing. A DTC meeting with a legislator:
– is an opportunity for a press release highlighting the person’s issues.
– provides the general public a chance to hear from the candidate.
– let’s the members hear about how to help.
– allows for the legislator to hear from active Democrats.
– helps the legislator have strong connections with constituents.
– sends a message that the legislator is meeting with constituents.

You Have to Laugh Occasionally – Edited by Matt Shear
LOLGOP – [Re Palin saying Sacha Baron Cohen (AKA Borat) tricked her into interview while wearing disguise] So Sacha Baron Cohen fooled Sarah Palin into thinking she was helping a veteran, something that has not happened to her since 2008.
Last weekend’s messages and highlights from our fearless Democratic leaders:
Senator Elizabeth Warren’s video about how important it is to challenge Trump’s border policies: “…we will not permit America to break up families. And that’s how I see this. Donald Trump is not King. The power is with the people.”
Video of Senator Markey’s remarks at Saturday’s march in Boston: “Donald Trump wants to make America hate again and we are standing up and saying that he will not take our country.
Coverage of Congressman Joe Kennedy’s remarks on Saturday: “We stand up and we say, not on our watch. Not while we have something to say about it…they will stand up and fight for our humanity and the humanity of our neighborhood.”
Congresswoman Katherine Clark’s posts and photos from the Framingham rally: @From MA5 to our nation’s capital and across the country, Americans are taking to the streets to stand in solidarity with immigrant families until they are reunited.”
Congressman Jim McGovern’s video from the Worcester march: “This is about tearing up families and that goes against our values. That betrays who we are and we need to stand up to that.”
Attorney General Healey’s video with Alyssa Milano on why she’s suing to stop family separation: “President Trump’s family separation policy isn’t just illegal – it’s immoral. Families remain apart. We can’t turn our back on them.”
Coverage of Senators Warren and Markey calling on the Trump administration to release the full list of separated families to ensure we are taking steps to reunite all families.
