AAOC Conference, August Events & More!

Greetings from Patrick (& Kate)
Dear Democrats,

Tomorrow, August 10th, MassDems is hosting another exciting event: our 2nd Annual Affirmative Action Outreach Conference! We encourage all interested Democrats to attend to learn more about our engagement efforts in communities of color and emerging immigrant communities to develop mobilization skills and support community-building efforts. The conference runs from 3 – 6 PM and will be held at Springfield College, Locklin Hall, Room 233, 263 Alden Street, Springfield, MA 01109.

Please share this event among your networks. If you or someone else is interested in attending, you can sign up here: If you have any questions, please contact the MassDems Political Director, Nigel Simon, at 617-939-0800 or

Patrick Coyne
Communications Manager, Massachusetts Democratic Party

If you know of an event that’s not listed, reach out to us at and we’ll include it in the next edition of the dispatch! If you have events that you would like to include in our weekly Dispatch, please email us at by Thursday at 5:00 pm so we can include in our Friday email.

Ideas for Committees – DTC Summer Fundraisers!
As we get closer to 2019 elections, now is a great time for DTCs to host fundraisers and increase membership. Consider hosting a summer-themed fundraiser and look for local events in your community where you can encourage more community members to get involved. Another fun idea is to host a joint fundraiser with other DTCs in your area. Together, you can share costs, get higher turnout, and build important connections with other Democrats near you! If your committee decides to host an event like this, be sure to send it to so we can promote it here in the dispatch!

Update: Submitting Events to the Dispatch
The Massachusetts Democratic Party will be partnering with me on issuing the Democratic Dispatch. It is our hope that the first issue that is sent out by them will be the June 28th issue. Towards that end please keep the following in mind:
– Please send information to This is the best way to get your events listed.
– If you have a mailing list that you use for events, please include on your mailing list. As time permit we will look for appropriate events to include.
– I will continue to look at my facebook invitations and my personal email for events to include, but I anticipate having less time to do this in the future.
– Please do not use Matt’s personal email address for events (
NOTE: If you want your event listed on the MassDems calendar as well, you pretty much need to include an end time for your event. IF you want an event in the Dispatch, but not the MassDems, please say so. Thanks for your patience with this transition.

Ideas for Committees – Preview of Reorganization Timeline – Advice
08/01/19 Last day for city and ward committees to notify the Secretary of Commonwealth of the number of members to be elected to each ward and town committee.
08/06/19 Nomination papers available at the Election Division in the Office of the Secretary of the Common wealth and some city and town clerks’ offices for ward, town and state committee.
11/08/19 Last day and hour (5PM) to submit ward, town or state committee nomination papers to Registars of Voters for certification of signatures.
11/15/19 Last day and hour (5PM) for Registrars of Voters to complete certification of signatures on nomination papers for ward, town and state committees.
11/19/19 Last day and hour (5PM) to file ward, town and state committee nomination papers with the Secretary of the Commonwealth.
Every four years Democratic Town and Ward Committees need to reorganize.
Check the calendar above and think about either scheduling meetings that allow you to take the actions listed above or if your current meeting schedule allows you to accomplish what needs to be done.
In brief the process starts with each committee choosing the potential number of members to be elected on the ballot. Generally I encourage committees to “Fill Every Seat. Legally, each committee can set the number between 3 and 35. I mention this now to encourage people to think about this issue now so that you can have a vote in time to get the information to the SOC on or before 08/01.
Between 8/6 and 11/9 nomination papers need to be circulated and signed. It’s prudent to have a meeting during this time as well as a plan to connect with people who might not attend a meeting.
Finally, it’s good to schedule time to get the papers into the SOC.
