DemDispatch Worcester Organizing Meeting, Events, Fundraisers and More

Dear Democrats,

I'm in Atlanta for the DNC meeting. I'm having a blast and I am very impressed by the quality of candidates running for party office.

Please note that Congressman Jim McGovern's organizing breakfast on Saturday has moved to Union Station in Worcester. They needed a bigger venue. I really wish that I could be there but I have not yet mastered the art of being in two places at the same time.

I have included a resolution that was passed at the DSC meeting. It is listed below and worth reading.

#resistance2017

Democratically yours,
Kate Donaghue
PS Events and schedules change rapidly. Matt and I work hard to get the most up to date information, but sometimes we don't receive notices of changes. Weather can cause cancellations and postponements as well. If in doubt, watch MassDems calendar and check with the organizers.

Ideas for Committees - Outreach
When you are trying to get people engaged, there are many ways to reach out to people. Traditional print communication can be hugely effective. Social media reaches a different segment of the population. Word of mouth is highly effective. And nothing says "I love you" like a phone call. In my community we recently had a very well attended meeting. I made a point of asking people how they find out about the meeting and why they decided to attend. The worse thing you can do is nothing. Do something. If it doesn't work figure out what went wrong, fix it and try again. Or try something else.

DSC RESOLUTION
WHEREAS, human dignity and human rights are the most fundamental rights of all people in this country and around the world, and are basic American values, but
WHEREAS, the President-elect Trump has issued a constant stream of attacks on immigrants, Muslims, African Americans, Latinos, students, the LBGT community, and minorities of all races, religious beliefs and gender, and
WHEREAS, Trump's statements have given license to racist attacks, hate crimes, xenophobia, and Islamophobia, and
WHEREAS, fears of heightened bigotry and hate crimes have become reality, and the list of incidents keeps growing, and
WHEREAS, Trump's Executive Orders on Immigration and refugees violate all sense of our basic American values and,
WHEREAS, Trump's appointments to key administration posts, including the outspoken white nationalist Steve Bannon as chief White House strategist, and far-right Alabama Senator Jeff Sessions for Attorney General.
NOW THEREFORE, we, the members of the Democratic State Committee hereby resolve unequivocally that The Massachusetts Democratic Party: Denounces and rejects all hate crimes, bigotry, xenophobia, anti-semitism and Islamophobia, and
Rejects the Executive Orders targeting immigrants who seek safety, freedom, and opportunity in the United States, and
Rejects the building of additional walls on our southern border, and
Rejects the building of the new 'internment' camps, only vaguely disguised as more prisons for asylum seekers and potential deportees before their cases are finally adjudicated, and
Rejects policies based on demonizing and criminalizing people who are struggling to lead good lives in the U.S., working hard, raising families, and contributing to our communities as generations before them have done, and
Unequivocally supports our immigrants, Muslims, African Americans, Latinos, students, the LBGTQ community, and minorities and vulnerable populations of all races, religious beliefs, and gender in the face of such hate crimes and racism, and
Therefore be it known that:
The Massachusetts Democratic Party stands with you. We support you. We will fight alongside you, and we will not let you down!
Passed Unanimously: February 2, 2017

11/14/2017 DSC Meeting
Tuesday, November 14
Save the date.
Watch massdems.org for details.

Caucus and Convention Information
The method of selecting delegates was approved on November 14 by the DSC.
Please refer to this document (once is is posted) for information on the process. Some of the key dates are listed here:
Deadline for notifying MDP of caucus date: January 27, 2017
Caucus window: February 4 to April 2, 2017
Convention date: June 3, 2017 in Lowell
NOTE: The DSC voted to allow sixteen and seventeen year old pre-registered Democrats to take part in the State Convention and vote on the party platform at the 2017 Democratic State Convention, if they become delegates. Preregistered Democrats who will be age 18 by the anticipated date of the 2018 primary will be able to participate in caucuses and run for delegate or to apply to become youth add-on delegates.
PLATFORM: Since it is a platform convention, caucuses usually go fairly quickly. This makes it easier to have a committee meeting in conjunction with your local caucus. A specific time for a caucus is required. For example it it is not allowed to have the caucus follow the adjournment of a committee meeting. But a committee meeting can immediately following the adjournment of a caucus. With the very long window it is easy to schedule a caucus on the same day as a regular meeting. With the provision to have candidates who are absent be able to run under specified conditions, many committees find this to be a practical way to proceed.

Please send us your Democratic events. We want to publicize what you are doing. We usually go to press on Friday AM, so make sure you send your info no later than Thursday evening to get into that week's issue.

Note that unlike some other Yahoo groups, replies and other comments sent to us at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. come only to us and are not published.

The Democratic Dispatch is a more or less weekly e-mail newsletter for Democratic events across the state. Your editors are Kate Donaghue and Matt Shear. Pace Willisson handles the tech stuff. We edit this as volunteers as our way of promoting the Democratic Party, Democratic candidates and the Democratic Platform. The positions represented in the regular "Greetings from Kate" or "Greetings from Matt" reflect our personal positions, and not those of the Democratic Party.

Thanks! Kate Donaghue (and Matt Shear)

Ideas for Committees - Choosing Your Caucus TIme
The caucus window for 2017 is February 4th - April 2nd. This gives Committees a lot of flexibility. In a platform committee year, the caucus is usually fairly quick. Many committees find that it is helpful to have a committee meeting in conjunction with their caucus. The caucus has to be at a time certain so it is generally best to have the caucus first, immediately followed by a committee meeting. Sometimes committees schedule a meeting first, followed by their caucus an hour later. That is allowed, but has the disadvantage that if your meeting is quick, people are waiting for the caucus to start. Additionally, if non-members come at the published time for the caucus, they may not be aware of a meeting that they might otherwise have attended.
SUMMARY OF CAUCUS INFORMATION.
- notify the MDP office of your caucus NO LATER THAN January 27th.
- eligible young people who PREREGISTER as Democrats may vote at a caucus.
- Platform Convention is June 3rd in Lowell
