 Kate Donaghue's Democratic Dispatch - Dec 10, 2016

Dear Democrats,

It's going to be a fun party here in Westborough on Sunday and you are invited. I host an open house at my home so that people can socialize together. Join area Democrats as we look towards the future and celebrate the holiday season together. This is family friendly and football friendly event. Elected officials joining us include US Senator Elizabeth Warren, AG Maura Healey, Secretary Bill Galvin, Treasurer Deb Goldberg, Auditor Suzanne M. Bump, Congressman Jim McGovern, State Senator Jamie Eldridge, Newton Mayor Setti Warren and newly elected DSC Chair Gus Bickford. The elected officials come and go just like other guests at the open house.

This year, more than ever, it is important that we keep our connections with each other strong so that we can work together over the next four years. I always enjoy meeting Dispatch readers. Feel free to bring a friend. Although it does tend to get crowded, I encourage folks who are interested in learning about how to get involved in the Democratic Party to join us. Details in the calendar section below or here on facebook; https://www.facebook.com/events/222408928199316/

Now, more than ever, I encourage people to send Democratic events to the Dispatch. Those of us who are known to be active hear from people outside our own areas asking how to connect with local people. If your Democratic Town Committee meeting or a Democratic gathering is listed here, it is easier for interested people to connect. Send events to DDemDispatch-owner@yahoogroups.com.

With the holidays coming up we may be temporarily adjusting the Dispatch schedule. We'll decide the final schedule depending on what events come in. Please send information as soon as it is finalized.

Democratically yours,

Kate Donaghue

PS Events and schedules change rapidly. Matt and I work hard to get the most up to date information, but sometimes we don't receive notices of changes. Weather can cause cancellations and postponements as well. If in doubt, watch MassDems calendar and check with the organizers.

Ideas for Committees - Plan a Democratic Voter Registration Event in January

Registering voters is important work that is easy and fun. I am finding that people are very interested in becoming Democrats. January will be a good time to get people registered. As we near the inauguration people are yearning to do something positive; a voter registration drive gives people the opportunity to do something concrete. There is also high interest among people who we will be asking to register as Democrats. A voter registration drive can be done door to door or in public areas where people congregate. During a Democratic registration drive:
- Recruit registered Democrats to become more active.
- Encourage voters who are not in a party to become Democrats.
- Register those who are eligible to become voters.
- Pre-register sixteen and seventeen year olds. - Invite non-citizens to take part in volunteering in campaigns.
Organizations are encouraged to take part in Martin Luther King Day of Service. https://www.serve.gov/site-page/mlkday

Chairman Bickford writes...
Former Secretary of Public Safety Andrea Cabral and State Committee Member Mark DiSalvo have agreed to Co-Chair the Search Committee. Mayor Dan Rivera, DNC Member and former Executive Director Sue Thomson, and former Mayor Lisa Wong have also agreed to serve. I believe this will help us find the best individual to work with us to elect Democrats in 2018. Anyone interested in applying must have his/her application submitted by close of business on December 24th. The five person search committee will interview qualified applicants January 3-5, 2017, and will select up to three finalists. It is my hope that we will be able to announce a new Executive Director by January 17th. For more information and a job description: http://bit.ly/2fNo2iG

Message from Mass Dems
"Chairman Bickford asked if there was some way we could keep everyone engaged and help our fellow Democrats in Louisiana win the upcoming run-off election for US Senate. Louisiana's elections are a bit different from what we have and if no candidate wins a majority in November's election, the top two finishers compete in a run-off. This means we still have an opportunity to have an impact and take a step closer to winning control of the US Senate."
