Statement by Democratic Party Chairman Phil Johnston on December Job Loss Report

January 14, 2005

"While the rest of the country may be inching out of an economic recession, Massachusetts remains firmly stuck in neutral and in danger of sliding into reverse. With today's report that Massachusetts has lost another 3,300 jobs, it appears that this state continues to lag behind the recovering economy enjoyed by much of the country.

“This is disheartening news for the people and the businesses of this state. Governor Romney, who campaigned on a promise to attract high-paying, professional jobs to this state, must bear much of the blame.

“During his campaign two years ago, Mitt Romney promised he would be the ‘jobs governor'. Now we see what he meant. Apparently, he was talking about losing jobs. I think the voters expected the numbers would go up rather than down. Under normal circumstances when a CEO performs as poorly as Mitt Romney, they hear Donald Trump's familiar refrain: You're fired! I have no doubt the voters will say just that in 2006.”
