Democratic Party Chairman Supports Mayor Menino on Gay Marriage Issue

Democratic Party Chairman Phil Johnston congratulated Boston Mayor Thomas Menino on his recent statements questioning the legality of requiring proof of residency for gay couples applying for marriage licenses.

Johnston said, “Mayor Menino has been a passionate supporter of equal rights for all people and he is absolutely correct to call Boston a city that will not tolerate discrimination. He understands that singling out gay people to prove their Massachusetts residency in order to obtain a marriage license is nothing less than discrimination. Mayor Menino should be applauded for questioning the validity of this action by Governor Mitt Romney and it is my hope that the Mayor’s legal advisers are of the same opinion.”
