“We heard nothing new tonight. The President continued to promote failed and dangerous policies,” stated Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman Philip Johnston. Chairman Johnston said, “While the body count increases in Iraq , President Bush continues to insist that his ‘surge' policy will work, despite the fact that even Republican leaders now oppose him. It is tragic that the Bush policy on Iraq has led our country down a path which has cost so many lives and so much of our national treasure. All the evidence suggests that this policy is simply creating more chaos and terrorism in the Middle East .”
Johnston, who served as Massachusetts Secretary of Health and Human Services under Governor Michael Dukakis, also criticized the Bush health policy as “completely inadequate in terms of meeting the needs of the 45 million citizens without health insurance in our country. The President would be well-advised to follow the lead of Senator Kennedy, who advocates expansion of the Medicare program to provide high-quality, affordable health care to every American.” Johnston confirmed, “It is particularly disappointing that, despite the opposition of two-thirds of the voters, President Bush continues to pursue the same foreign and domestic policies which have failed us so badly during the past six years.”
