A message from Chairman Johnston on Mitt Romney Desperately Dialing for Dollars

January 8, 2007

Massachusetts Governor Mitt Romney will jumpstart his campaign for the Republican nomination by holding a fundraiser in Boston .  In an effort to raise money for his potential Presidential run, Romney and a staff of over 250 will occupy the Boston convention center for a Jerry Lewis style telethon minus the charitable cause.  But fundraising won't be Romney's only hurdle to the oval office, Romney's continued smooth talk on immigration, taxes, abortion and gay marriage will leave voters and donors wondering where he really stands on the issues.

"Mitt Romney will be hard at work today trying to talk donors out of their dollars," said Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman Phil Johnston.  "Mitt Romney will have to raise boat loads of money to run a presidential campaign in an effort to persuade the American people that he is a straight shooter.  In the end, however, voters will look at his flip-flops on immigration, abortion, gay rights, taxes and many other key issues and reach the same conclusion Massachusetts voters reached some time ago-that Mitt Romney stands for nothing but himself.  Over the last four years in our state, we have witnessed the sad spectacle of a Governor who will say anything in order to advance his own political career.  Massachusetts voters did not buy it and I am sure that voters across the country will not buy it either."
