A message from Chairman Johnston on Governor Romney's Filing Paperwork for Presidential Campaign

January 3, 2007

“Mitt Romney is the personification of the ‘Mitt Principle” – if you are a disaster at one job, you immediately seek the next opportunity to fail on a grander scale.

In one of the worst kept secrets in Massachusetts ' political history, our one-term Governor today filed the necessary paperwork to officially begin his campaign for President. This should come as a surprise to absolutely no one, since Mitt Romney has been running for national political office since before he was elected governor of Massachusetts .

Since his election in 2002, Mitt has spent an alarming number of days out of state as he laid the groundwork in important Primary states for his run for president. Meanwhile, Massachusetts has been hemorrhaging jobs and population. Property taxes have skyrocketed as the governor slashed local aid to cities and towns, and despite having spent millions of dollars in a disastrous attempt to elect his hand-picked candidates, voters now need a magnifying glass to find a Republican office holder in this state.

So today, let me say farewell to our departing governor. Good luck, Mitt, as you pursue your destiny in fulfillment of the Mitt Principle.
