Today is a critically important day in the battle to achieve equality for our gay and lesbian citizens. If the equal rights marriage amendment comes to a vote during the Constitutional C onvention today , it is of the utmost importance that the Legislature support s the position of the Massachusetts Supreme Court; that gay and lesbian citizens have the same right to marriage as everyone else in our state.
The P latform of the Massachusetts Democratic Party is very clear in this matter and was the first in the country to state the position that same sex marriage ought to be recognized as a fundamental civil rights issue. Now , after several years of debate, the overwhelming majority of Massachusetts citizens agree with us. We need Democrats in the Legislature to support the Party 's position on th is very important matter today.
