Statement on Why Governor Romney Won't Take a Stand on Smoking Ban

October 23, 2003

Sen. Lees' move today to delay debate on the statewide smoking ban is just one more step to stall a bill that has already been fully debated by both the House and the Senate. Why the delay tactic? Is Sen. Lees waiting until Governor Romney finally takes a stand on the issue?

Obviously, the Governor has some issues to ponder before he declares his position on a statewide ban on workplace smoking:

  • As the former chief executive officer of Bain and Company, Romney reportedly enjoyed a close professional relationship with his Big Tobacco clients, Philip Morris and Brown & Williamson. It appears that Governor Romney is an 'insider' of a different type on Beacon Hill.

  • Just this past summer, Governor Romney decimated funding for the state's tobacco control programs, which are now forced to operate at a fraction of their former budget. So much for campaign pledges not to cut essential state services.

Perhaps the Governor is just too busy deciding on names for tunnels to decide how he feels about an important issue that affects the health of every working man and woman in this state.
