Statement from Democratic Party Spokeswoman Jane Lane Calling Romney Administration Statements 'hypocritical'

Governor Romney owes the members of the Massachusetts Legislature an apology for the statement his spokeswoman made yesterday questioning their respect for U.S. troops killed in Iraq. Not only is it an offensive partisan attack, it is the height of hypocrisy for the Governor or his spokeswoman to question the level of respect the members of the Legislature have for the men and women who serve in the military.

I must remind the administration that it was Governor Romney - not the Legislature - who filed legislation on March 28 which placed a cap of $1,000 on the monthly salary paid to public employees on military leave. It was the Senate - and not Governor Romney - which filed and passed opposing legislation that ensured that no public employee would be penalized while on military leave. Under Senate bill 1525, public employees would be guaranteed their full base salary, reduced by any pay they receive from their military service.

For the Governor's spokeswoman to insinuate that the Legislature has disrespected the men and women serving in the military by opposing the Governor's suggested name for the main Central Artery tunnel defies all logic and, more importantly, is patently untrue. I commend the men and women of the Massachusetts Legislature for their patriotism and for defending the job security and salaries of our public employees on military leave.
