Statement on the State's August Unemployment Figures

Party Press Release
October 2003

"Instead of going to California to support the 'Terminator', Governor Romney should stay here and stop the termination of jobs in Massachusetts," said Massachusetts Democratic Party Chair Phil Johnston in response to today's release of the August unemployment figures. "What's he going to do in California, instruct Arnold Schwarzenegger on the fine art of terminating jobs for working men and women?"

"The loss of 8,200 jobs in the last month stands in stark contrast to the promises made by the 'Jobs Governor', who last year pledged to create thousands of new jobs in the state," Johnston added.

"Month after month, the employment news in this state appears more desperate. In July, the state lost more than 9,000 jobs - second only to Texas, the home state of another administration presiding over the worst national economy in decades. Candidate Romney pledged to use his business skills to rebuild the economy and create jobs. My question is: What's he waiting for? In one year, more than 45,000 jobs have vanished from this state. That is an immense loss which impacts more than the economy; it directly affects families and the communities in which they live."
