Statement by Massachusetts Democratic Party Chairman Philip W. Johnston on latest disastrous economic numbers for Massachusetts

March 12, 2004

“The latest news that Massachusetts has officially lost jobs faster than any other state is proof that the Bush-Romney recession is a disaster for the country and Massachusetts in particular.

Yesterday's report from the US Department of Labor is a direct assault on Governor Romney's failure to carry out the very core of his gubernatorial campaign -- to be the state's “top salesman” as he travels the country attracting new businesses to the state.

Instead, all this governor has managed to do is to watch while the state hemorrhages thousands of jobs each month -- from manufacturing to telecommunications.

Since the Bush administration began, the state has suffered the loss of nearly 210,000 jobs [MA Div. of Unemployment Assistance news release 2/27/04].

The numbers speak for themselves: For a man who campaigned on his business experience to lure jobs into the state, Governor Romney has been nothing less than a disaster for this state's economy. Thousands of unemployed people in this state would agree.”
